How to plan a Cozumel island drive
Understand the loop before leaving town
Most self-guided drives follow the developed west side south, cross toward the east coast, then return toward San Miguel. Services become limited on the quieter side, and mobile reception may be inconsistent. Start with enough fuel, save an offline map, and avoid committing to a tight return immediately after the drive.
Treat the east coast as exposed terrain
The ocean-facing side can be windy, rough, and unsuitable for swimming even when the west coast is calm. Stop for the view, but read signs and local conditions before entering the water. Pull fully off the road only where it is safe, lock the vehicle, and do not leave valuables visible. Palapa restaurants and scenic stops can close or change hours, so carry water and a backup snack.
Choose the right vehicle and pace
A standard car is enough for the main paved loop; an open vehicle offers less protection from sun and sudden rain. Inspect rental damage, understand the fuel policy, and confirm insurance terms before leaving. The drive is most enjoyable when it remains simple: a few deliberate stops, a relaxed lunch, and enough daylight to return without rushing.
